The Hidden Cost of Staying Where You’ve Outgrown

If you find yourself circling whether you should leave and start again - be it your profession, or life as a whole, it can often feel easier to remain where you are and avoid thinking too deeply about what you should do.

Leaving and starting again can feel risky.  There’s so much uncertainty about the future, what will other people think, and what if you make the wrong decision?  These are common thoughts…. I know, because they are the thoughts I had.

Part of you wants to do something else, be somewhere else, but another part of you wants familiarity and safety. When you can’t decide, you go back and forth in your mind, but in the physical world, you stay where you are.

In the physical world, you are choosing to stay, this might feel safer and more certain but staying in a place where you no longer fit, actually comes with a cost.

I talk about these hidden costs in the following video.

You can’t decide because you’re outgrowing your life as you know it.

It Doesn’t Just Impact You

When you stay because it feels safer, the cost can be both emotional and physical. As a movement therapist, I frequently work with clients who have stayed in roles because they didn’t know how to choose differently.

Work stress is often behind many physical aches and pains we experience.

Staying in a role that you are no longer happy in, not only affects you directly, but it also has an impact on your relationships with your loved ones.

Why You Can’t Decide

When you’re undecided about something big and life changing, like starting a new career or relocating, the decision is rarely the problem.  It’s more likely to be about who you are and who you are becoming.  You’re outgrowing your life as you know it.

If it was purely about the job, you would have decided by now.

The change that you are considering impacts you at an identity level - how you see yourself and how others view you.

Outgrowing your life doesn’t mean you have to turn your back on everything you know or make dramatic decisions overnight, but in order to get moving, you do need honesty - with yourself.

So right now, when you think about the dilemma of whether to stay or leave, give yourself permission to want more and ask: what is the part that wants to leave saying?

You do not need to have the whole plan figured out to start taking steps. If you don’t know where to start or you aren’t clear on what you want, support and guidance is available.

If you know you no longer want to stay where you are but have no idea how to move forward, I offer Life Direction Audits - a 90 minute session that helps you get clear on what you want and practical steps you can start taking. Find out more about working with me.
