Don’t Reinvent Yourself Just Yet.
You may not need a new life. You might need a better fitting one.
We hear a lot about reinvention in midlife. But the idea can create a huge amount of pressure. It suggests you need to become someone completely different. And if you’re already feeling uncertain or stuck, that can make things worse.
Perhaps you’re asking:
What should I do instead?
What is my purpose now?
Should I change careers?
Have I wasted all these years?
Suddenly, a feeling that something isn’t quite right has become the enormous task of figuring out your entire future.
It’s no surprise you feel stuck.
Instead, try looking at your life as something that may simply no longer fit who you’ve become.
The career that once suited you may no longer give you what you need. Your priorities may have changed. Things you once tolerated may now feel unbearable. Things you once wanted may no longer matter as much. And things you didn’t have time, confidence or permission to explore before may now be calling your attention.
That doesn’t mean your whole life is wrong.
It means you have changed.
I know this because I’ve been there
For years, I was climbing a ladder that ultimately wasn’t right for me, but I stayed on it because I couldn’t see any viable alternatives.
I stayed with what I knew. I questioned myself. I tried to work out what I should do next, without really understanding what had changed for me or what I actually wanted.
Looking back, I realise I didn't need to throw everything away and become someone completely different. I needed to understand what no longer fitted and what I wanted more of.
Rather than asking “What should I do with my life?” it would have been more useful to ask:
“What needs to change so that my life fits who I am now?”
This is a very different place to make decisions from.
In my video You Don’t Need to Reinvent Your Life, I share more questions you should be asking yourself instead.
