Is Your ‘Protector’ Keeping You Safe, or Just Keeping You Stuck?
Feeling stuck? It feels like safety. In reality, it’s a freeze response.
Why You’re Stuck: The Real Reason You Can’t Make a Move
We’ve all been there. You have a decision hanging over you - should you change careers, leave a relationship, start a project you’ve been dreaming of - yet, weeks or even months pass, and you haven't moved an inch.
You might tell yourself you’re just a "procrastinator" or that you’re "waiting for the right time." But the truth is often much simpler, and a little more internal.
The Protector at the Controls
If you’ve been feeling stuck, it’s likely because your Protector has stepped in.
Your Protector is that internal voice designed to keep you safe. It views big decisions as "threats" to your current stability. When you’re unsure of what you want, or you’re still processing a big shift, your Protector slams on the brakes, shielding you from the danger of the unknown by keeping you exactly where you are.
It feels like safety. In reality, it’s a freeze response.
The Clarity Gap: Why Some Choices Feel "Easy"
I used to wonder why I could make massive, life-altering decisions, like moving house or buying a property, with total confidence, while I’d spend years procrastinating over something like a PT course.
When I looked closer, I found a pattern: Clarity vs. Weight.
The House Move: I had total clarity. I knew exactly what wasn't working in my old place and exactly what I needed in the new one. Because I knew the "why," the decision felt logical.
The PT Course: I put too much weight on it. I saw it as a permanent shift in my career and my identity. Because I lacked clarity on what I actually wanted from it, I stayed stuck in an "all-or-nothing" mindset.
Breaking the Cycle of Indecision
Most of us stay frozen because we treat every decision as a "stay or go" leap where everything is at stake. We worry that if we choose "wrong," we’ll lose everything we’ve built.
But here is the secret to breaking that cycle: Most decisions are reversible. They aren't life sentences; they are data-gathering exercises. When you treat a decision as a "test," you lower the stakes. You give your Protector permission to let go of the brakes because the "threat" is no longer a giant leap, it’s just a small step.
How to Stop Overthinking and Start Moving
If you are stuck in a loop of indecision right now, try shifting your perspective:
Identify the Weight: Are you treating this choice like a permanent identity shift? Can you reframe it as a "test decision" instead?
Lower the Stakes: Instead of asking "Should I change my entire career?", ask "What is one small thing I can do to test this new direction?"
Gather Data: Real clarity doesn't come from thinking harder; it comes from doing. Every small action gives you the information you need to pivot or proceed.
Staying frozen teaches you nothing. It just keeps you in the noise. By taking one small, low-stakes step today, you start to untangle that noise and find the path forward.
What is one "test" step you could take this week?
